For travel, choose a dash cam by its recording setup, storage and power connection before comparing resolution. A camera that records while driving does not automatically record after the ignition is off. A rental-car power outlet, an always-on adapter and a hardwired installation are different arrangements.

We selected VIOFO A119 Mini 2 and Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3, 010-02899-00, as two identifiable front-camera options: VIOFO documents higher-resolution recording and an onboard display; Garmin documents a compact app-managed 1080p camera. We have not tested license-plate readability, night footage, heat tolerance, parking detection or app reliability. A larger pixel count is not proof that one captures every incident more clearly.

VIOFO A119 Mini 2: display and GPS, with a separate parking-power decision

The maker documents a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensor, GPS, voice control and a supercapacitor. The supercapacitor is not a removable battery pack for autonomous parked recording. Plan for the specified vehicle supply and compatible installation rather than expecting the camera to keep recording indefinitely after unplugging it.

VIOFO lists the HK4/HK6 hardwire families as compatible accessories on the captured product page. Verify the current exact kit, vehicle and installation requirements before purchase. Its parking-mode explanation distinguishes event detection, time lapse and low-bitrate recording. Those are recording strategies, not a guarantee every impact will be captured.

The maker lists 1440p at 60fps and separately promotes HDR. We do not claim that every resolution, frame rate and HDR setting is simultaneously available. Check the actual mode table/firmware before choosing a configuration. GPS data also needs a sharing decision: inspect what location or speed information is retained before sending footage to someone else.

Drawback: parking use adds a compatible power accessory and installation work. A front-only camera does not provide a rear-camera view, and a higher-resolution mode does not establish better plate recognition under motion or glare.

Garmin Mini 3: small camera with app and connection requirements

Garmin identifies this Mini 3 as part 010-02899-00. Its compact 1080p design uses Garmin Drive for setup and video management. The manual instructs the user to format the card for the camera and describes how to preserve clips. Learn that sequence while parked before depending on it during a trip.

The Mini 3 manual discusses location information when it is networked with a GPS-connected camera; that is not evidence of a built-in GPS receiver in this Mini 3. If GPS is essential, obtain exact confirmation of the required camera arrangement rather than assigning the feature from another Garmin model.

Parking Guard requires an always-on 12V supply or the parking-mode cable accessory. The manual conditions smartphone incident notifications on a Wi-Fi connection. Do not equate local card recording with a guaranteed remote alert. Cloud/Vault and live-view features can have additional connection or service requirements; we make no free-service or included-subscription promise.

Drawback: the app, power setup and optional connected features add dependencies beyond mounting a small camera. Exact internal energy-storage chemistry is not established by the reviewed manual, so we do not label the Mini 3 a supercapacitor or battery model.

Vehicle compatibility before purchase

SituationResolve before installationWhy it matters
Rental vehicleOperator’s mounting/cabling permission; permitted outletHardwiring or adhesive mounting may not suit the rental
Ignition-switched outletWhether driving-only recording meets your needsCamera can lose power after shutdown
Parking recordingExact kit, supply protection and qualified installationA USB-C connector alone does not establish compatibility
Mounting positionLocal rules, sight lines, vehicle sensors and airbagsNo universal legal mounting position is asserted
Clip retrievalCard handling, app access and backupA recorded clip still needs to be preserved

Do not operate the camera or app while driving. Follow the maker’s installation instructions and use appropriate professional help for wiring; this guide is not a fuse-box installation procedure.

Budget beyond the camera

SetupCosts to include; current totals unknownMain drawback
Driving-only front recordingExact camera, approved card and permitted mount/powerNo assumption of parked recording
VIOFO parking setupCompatible hardwire kit and installationAdded vehicle-specific work
Garmin parking setupAppropriate always-on adapter or cable; any service you selectRemote features have additional dependencies
Longer tripCard/clip backup method and spare permitted suppliesMore items to manage

No price ceiling or footage-quality ranking is supported. The car-charger guide covers a separate socket/charging allocation decision; it does not approve any charger for either camera. Match the actual recording, storage and parked-power requirements first.
