Buy a privacy filter for the exact display, not simply the diagonal number. A generic 14-inch 16:9 filter and a model-specific MacBook Pro 14-inch filter answer different fit requirements. Start with Kensington MagPro Elite K58370WW for a MacBook Pro 14-inch model covered by its compatibility list; compare 3M PF140W9B for a 14-inch 16:9 laptop after checking its active screen dimensions and mounting clearance.

Selection method

We chose a model-specific magnetic filter and a generic aspect-ratio filter to explain the two main fit paths. We compared primary fit/mounting documentation, documented side-view restrictions and reversible finishes. We have not tested visibility, brightness, touch response, scratch resistance or laptop closure. Manufacturer privacy language describes an intended optical effect; it is not a DCL security certification.

Primary evidence: Kensington’s exact K58370WW page and 3M’s PF140W9B page. We inspected Kensington’s Italian documentation and its North American Apple catalogue, which identifies the same 14-inch SKU.

The fit check that prevents the wrong purchase

Write down your laptop’s complete model and generation. Measure the visible display width and height, then compare the filter maker’s fit information. Do not assume that two laptops marketed as 14-inch use the same rectangular display. Camera notches, bezels, hinges and the space around the active display can also affect whether a particular attachment works.

For K58370WW, the manufacturer lists 309 × 202mm and direct magnetic attachment for its specified MacBook family. Treat those as the filter’s stated dimensions, not measurements of every compatible panel. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list for your generation. The retailer title names K58370WW and its selected size is 14 inches, but unrelated model/part fields and package-like dimensions appear elsewhere in the listing. We exclude those fields and do not extend compatibility beyond the manufacturer’s model-specific claim.

For PF140W9B, the important published selection is 14-inch 16:9. Do not use a retailer’s inconsistent dimensions to decide whether it will fit. The manufacturer’s current page describes its included attachment system; confirm what is supplied with the exact offer, especially when buying older stock.

Side-view privacy is a limited tool

The stated angles are manufacturer descriptions, not measured cutoffs from our use. Someone looking straight toward the screen may still see it. Brightness, lighting, viewing direction and installation are practical checks you should make with your own device before relying on the filter in a shared space. We do not promise protection from a camera, a person behind you, screen recording or access to the computer itself.

Choose the finish you can comfortably read in your usual lighting. Both makers describe a matte option intended to reduce glare and a glossy alternative. We have no measured brightness penalty or proof that one is clearer. If your work needs accurate visual judgement, verify the display with the filter on and off rather than assuming a reversible finish preserves every aspect of the image.

Remove a filter only as directed by its manufacturer and keep it protected in transit. Check that the hinge and lid move normally after installation; stop if there is resistance. The documented closure claim for the specified Kensington model does not apply to an unrelated filter or a poorly fitted unit.

We have not established a cheapest option or a universal privacy benefit. Verify the selected variant and included mounting parts before purchase.

If you also make calls from shared spaces, see the travel webcam guide. A camera shutter and a display filter address different exposure paths; neither warrants a blanket privacy promise.
